A deeply personal film from director Ivana Mladenovic, Ivana The Terrible is based on events that took place in the filmmaker's own life in the summer of 2017. Mladenovic plays herself as a Serbian-born director living in Romania, who returns home run-down and in the midst of a health crisis she doesn't fully understand, and one that her family is dismissive of. While home, she reunites with old friends and engages in a relationship with a younger man. As a small-town celebrity, she is also asked to be the face of an upcoming music festival by the town's mayor, which she agrees to. While home, she reunites with old friends, engages in a relationship with a younger man and, as a small-town celebrity, she is asked to be the face of an upcoming music festival which she, somewhat reluctantly, agrees to. While coping with her health issues, professional commitments and relationships, she also has to navigate her combative, complex and challenging family (in the film, her family members, all hugely engaging, play themselves). Described by the director as a "fictional autobiography", Ivana The Terrible is a bold, heartfelt, tragicomedy which illustrates a remarkable level of openness and self awareness from Mladenovic as she perceptively examines this pivotal period in her life.
