When Jasna (Daria Lorenci-Flatz) returns to her childhood home in Croatia in order to care for her mother, Anka (Neva Rosic), who is in ill health, she is forced to confront the complex, damaging relationship she has with her. Manipulative, resentful and prone to doling out aggressions, both micro and macro, her mother is more than resistant to her daughter's help. Matriarch features incredible performances by both Lorenci-Flatz and Rosic, and writer/director Jure Pavlović does a great job of conveying the suffocating, claustrophobic and psychologically damaging environment she has returned to. It's an insightful, humorous and hugely compelling film, and an impressive debut feature from Pavlović.
