Set in rural Japan, this is a remarkable coming-of-age drama features a stunning performance by Aya Kitai as the tenacious titular character. She plays Cocoa, a high-school student struggling to overcome poverty, a dysfunctional family and the repressive environment in which she lives. Showing remarkable fortitude, she fights to break free of the restraints that might prevent her from reaching her goals. It's a hugely impressive debut from director Genta Matsugami - a surprising, irreverent and distinctive celebration of bravery and resilience. Kitai was rightfully recognized with a best actor honourable mention at the 2019 Slamdance Film Festival.
