A particularly impressive debut film from writer/director Melanie Oates, Body and Bones centres on Tess (Kelly Van der Burg), a withdrawn 18-year-old living in rural Newfoundland, Canada, grieving after the recent loss of her mother. The one thing that comforts her is listening to the music of Danny Sharpe (Joel Thomas Hynes). When she wakes one day to find him in her kitchen, it ignites a spark of life in her that grows out of control. Van der Burg is exceptional in the lead role, giving a moving portrayal as the troubled Tess, and Hynes is equally impressive as the darkly compelling musician. It’s a distinctive and original take on the coming-of-age story.
