First time director Zhu Xin's impressive debut feature is a surreal, poetic and dreamlike exploration of memory and mortality. Set in Huangzhou in East China, this unconventional coming-of-age film centres on Senlin (Jiang Li), a teenager doing her best to endure the day-to-day monotony of the summer holidays - something she does, in part, through the creation of stories which allow her to escape into the lives of characters existing in her imagination. Reminiscent of the work of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, whom Xin has cited as an influence, the filmmaker utilizes distinctive sound design and striking imagery to great effect, enhancing the mysterious, off-kilter mood.
