"...the film belatedly emerges as one of the stronger fictional statements on 9/11." Variety
Set in the days following 9/11, David Heinz’ debut feature as a director sees two musicians traverse the USA having found themselves stranded in Los Angeles. Lacking the bombast of a number of films which were released after the Twin Towers attack, Heinz’ film examines the impact they had on the US by looking at the atrocity through the eyes of both the two protagonists at the heart of the film, as well as the individuals they encounter on their journey. This humanistic approach is very affecting, and by incorporating classic American folk songs (the film was titled AMERICAN FOLK on it’s initial release), as well as contemporary compositions into the film, the director adds a layer of emotion, history and compassion that would otherwise have been difficult to achieve.
