"This is a gorgeously gentle feature debut by the Canadian film-maker Geneviève Dulude-De Celles: a calm and tender portrait of a shy 12-year-old as she yo-yos between childhood and adolescence." - The Guardian

Winner of the Crystal Bear at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival, director Geneviève Dulude-De Celles's A Colony tells an intimate story about twelve year-old Mylia who is about to start high school. Living with her mother, father and younger sister, Camille in rural Quebec, her parents face their own relationship strifes, and her little sister considers Mylia her best friend and is often bullied at school. In an attempt to to fit in and forge her own path, Mylia strikes up a friendship with Jacinthe, a popular girl who encourages her to drink and experiment with boys, but Mylia is eventually torn between the popular crowd and her new and unexpected friendship with Jimmy, a boy who lives on the First Nations Reserve near Mylia’s family home, and who is considered an outcast at school. Divided between following her heart and also pushing her boundaries and fitting in, Mylia discovers a version of herself she didn't even know existed.
