In her dreamlike, essayistic film Obscuro Barroco, Greek director Evangelia Kranioti collaborates with trans activist Luana Muniz, an icon of Brazil's queer subculture, as she takes the audience on exhilarating, multi-sensory, textural trip through Rio de Janeiro’s nightlife, while reflecting on the trans experience and gender self-determination. Muniz draws on the words of author Clarice Lispector, specifically those from her novel Água Viva, as she navigates the city after dark. Kranioti's film is a celebratory experience of Rio's nightlife - a colourful, sensual, nocturnal landscape, populated by glorious revelers, costumed crowds and dazzling dancers.
