This family drama from director Patrick Wang, an adaptation of Leah Hager Cohen’s novel of the same name, beautifully and insightfully explores the emotional distance grief can create between family members who, while experiencing similar emotional pain, endure it in isolation. Like Wang’s other films, The Grief of Others is very much an ensemble piece and the film looks at not only the four family members at the heart of its story, but extended family members and newly formed friendships too. Wang’s intelligent, surprising screenplay combined with the excellent performances from the talented cast, particularly those of Trevor St. John and Wendy Moniz-Grillo, create a poignant, meaningful drama that is hugely affecting.
