"...deeply humanistic, profoundly touching work representing independent cinema at its finest..." The Hollywood Reporter
Patrick Wang’s remarkable debut feature, which he wrote, directed, produced and stars in, is an insightful and finely judged exploration of love, loss, fatherhood and friendship. Wang plays Joey who, following the tragic death of his partner Cody (Trevor St. John), learns that their son has been placed in the care of Cody's sister due to a clause in the will. Separated from his son, Joey leans into the support of a small circle of friends while struggling to find a lawyer who can assist him in regaining custody. The deliberate pace of In the Family provides the audience the space and time to become emotionally invested in the unjust situation Joey finds himself in, something that makes the film increasingly compelling and heightens its powerful and deeply touching conclusion.
