This distinctive psychological thriller from Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason follows an off duty policeman (a mesmerizing Ingvar Sigurdsson) as he continues to deal with the loss of his wife two years after her death. Devoting himself to caring for his grand-daughter (Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir in a memorable role) as well as the renovation of his home, he slowly realizes that the life he had with his wife was not all he thought it was - a realization which leads to an obsession that threatens to spiral out of control. Pálmason takes full advantage of Iceland's barren landscape which, alongside an evocative score, contributes to the film’s almost eerie, unnerving atmosphere. The tension increases at a deliberate pace as he film unfolds, leading to an electrifying, and heart-wrenching, conclusion.
