Director Raoul Peck followed-up his Oscar-nominated documentary, I Am Not Your Negro, with this hugely absorbing, fascinating account of the early years of the lives of Karl Marx (August Diehl) and Friedrich Engels (Stephan Konarske). Drawn together by their anger at the exploitation of the working classes, their respect for each others intellect and a desire to create a more just society, the two men work together to create a doctrine that can dismantle the establishment. Co-starring Vicky Kreips (The Phantom Thread) as Marx' wife Jenny, the performances are universally excellent, with Diehl on particularly fine form as the fiery Marx.
