In 1652, a bright, young girl named Krotoa is removed from her close-knit Khoi tribe to serve the Dutch East India Company. When she assimilates the Dutch language and culture, Krotoa ends up being rejected by her own Khoi people, and destroyed by the Dutch, all the while searching to find the middle path between the two cultures.
