Funny Cow follows a comedian (Maxine Peake) as she uses her troubled past as material for her stand-up routine, rising through the ranks of Northern England's working men's clubs in the 1970s. The dark side of the comedic circuit is depicted with an admirable authenticity, and the film doesn't shy away the racism and misogyny that were all too common within UK culture at the time. That said, there's plenty of humour, too, and the tragic and comedic are expertly balanced. The film features a fantastic line-up of British acting talent, including Paddy Considine, Stephen Graham and Alun Armstrong, as well as a wonderfully evocative score from Richard Hawley. But it is Peake who carries the film, giving a typically impressive performance as a tough, tenacious, yet tender, comedian.
